The Art of Jean VormelkerJean, who is both a creator and teacher of enamel and jewelry, finds that one often influences the other. Her MediaEnamelThe Basic process of enameling is deceptively simple. Ground, powdered glass is kiln or torch fired to one of several metals, producing rich colors of great depth that increases with each of may firings. One of the its beauties for the artist is that the gratification is so instantaneous; a minute or two after each firing you get to see exactly what you did before continuing with the process. Vitreous (glass) Enamel has been described as the medium for all artistic techniques. It can mimic water color, oil paint, crayon, ink and stained glass, to just touch the surface. In addition, because it is glass and metal, its durability exceeds most other media. It can be as detailed as a cloisonné or plique-à-jour piece, or as large as wall art. It is ideal for interior and outdoor installations as well as body adornment, bowls, dishes, boxes and sculpture. Jean's Vitreous Enamel art techniques include cloisonné, 2D and 3D plique-à-jour, grisaille, sgraffito, brush painting, dusting, stenciling, basse-taile, champlevé, and more that continue to emerge. Her work covers a wide range of techniques to achieve the exact look she needs for each piece. JewelryJean has been making jewelry and teaching it's various techniques for over 35 years. She currently concentrates on Precious Metal Clay, the newest and most exciting way to produce unique, one of a kind pieces as well as a series that follows a theme. PMC adapts very well to being enameled, and Jean teaches this specialty as well. Jean teaches basic and advanced classes both privately and in multi-day workshop settings. She also provides consultation for situations that need another mind to see what it is that the medium is doing to you. Follow the link to contact her about your particular interests.
